Irori are traditional architecture features in Japanese residences. They were traditionally the heart of cooking and dining experiences in very intimate settings. With the dissolution of cooking practices in urban residences, I documented more than a dozen irori in traditional Japanese homes throughout rural Japan. In contrast to irori, I also documented contemporary urban spaces of eating, cooking and socializing- most notably capsule hotels and gaming cafes. This research is conducted in conjunction with the Howarth Wright Graduate Fellowship and the Smartcraft Studio, in Hida, Japan 2018.
